Brief description

IP Australia recognised that its future depended on its ability to radically alter the scope of its services and the way it delivers them.  In parallel with this, the management team acknowledged that lack of coordination, communication and cooperation among teams was also a major irritant.  Likewise the working relationships between some areas of the branch and internal customers were not as robust as they could be.

The Human Dimension created a leadership development program which included a two-day residential followed by six-months of leadership coaching plus a series of skill workshops focused on interpersonal skills, conflict resolution, stress management, dealing with negativity in the workplace, emotional mastery, and management skills.

Skills required

  • Team building
  • Skill training
  • Coaching and mentoring
  • Group facilitation
  • Program development
  • Conflict resolution
  • Leadership development
  • Client contact skills

Lessons learned

The feedback The Human Dimension received is as follows:

“Over the course of several weeks Gary and Lyn Russell, principals of The Human Dimension and their team, negotiated an executive leadership and team program that met all of the requirements identified by the management team”.  There was a formal process of evaluating individual elements of the leadership program through exit surveys of participants.  These show a consistently high rating of both the materials presented (typically 80% in the "met all needs/met most needs") and of the presenters (typically 100% "excellent/very good").  The fact that very many of the participants were asking for extensions of some elements of the program and for "refreshers" in others is a good indication that the program is meeting the needs of the participants.  One of the key characteristics of the program was regular, frequent coaching of individuals and teams.  This coaching reinforced the skills acquired in workshops and residentials and also served to identify new needs as they emerge.  From the management team's perspective there is ample evidence that the leadership program has had a substantial positive effect.  One of the main areas of improvement is in the ability of senior and middle managers to handle massive change and yet continue to deliver increasing volumes of products.  One of the great strengths of the approach taken by The Human Dimension is the ability to tailor the content to suit the needs of individuals, work teams and business units.  Another great strength of The Human Dimension is the credibility of the principals as change agents”.

Relevance to potential clients

In a sense, IP Australia at this time was reinventing itself and moving towards a different kind of future.  The skills, attitudes and behaviours, particularly of managers and team leaders, needed significant upgrading across a wide range of areas and covered many aspects that many organisations are seeking.

We were able to do this through a mix of workshops, courses, facilitation, coaching and again, provide an integrated approach with strong connections to the broader organisational agenda.

This ensured that IP Australia was far better positioned to move into what was then becoming a global community driven by changes and technology and globalisation. The experience and expertise we have will benefit your people.
